Why You Should Be Eating More Bananas

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits in the world. They taste great and come with ample health benefits. So eating them is a win win!!

Bananas are believed to have originated up to 10,000 years ago. Some scientists even believe they may have been the world’s first fruit. The first bananas are thought to have grown in the region that includes the Malaya Peninsula, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Guinea.

Bananas are incredibly healthy, convenient, delicious, and one of the most inexpensive fresh fruits you can buy.

Here are just some of the health benefits of bananas:

  • Rich in nutrients. Such as Vitamin C, Potassium and Magnesium.
  • May improve blood sugar levels. Bananas are rich in soluble fiber. During digestion, soluble fiber dissolves in liquid to form a gel. It’s also what gives bananas their sponge-like texture
  • May support digestive health. One medium-sized banana provides about 3 grams of fiber – so it can help keep you regular.
  • May aid weight loss. Bananas have relatively few calories. The average banana has just over 100 calories, yet it’s nutritious and filling. If you are looking to eat less, a banana before a big meal can help you feel more full before you have the desire to over indulge.
  • May support heart health. This is largely due to the potassium content in bananas. Potassium is a mineral that’s vital for heart health, especially blood pressure management. However, few people get enough potassium in their diet. Bananas are a great source of potassium, with a medium-sized banana (126 grams) providing 10% of the DV.
  • They are full of antioxidants. They contain several types of potent antioxidants, including flavonoids and amines – which are linked to many health benefits, such as a reduced risk of heart disease and degenerative illnesses . They also help prevent oxidative damage to your cells caused by free radicals. Without antioxidants, free radicals can build up over time and cause harm if their levels become high enough in your body.
  • May improve kidney health. Potassium is vital for healthy kidney function and blood pressure regulation. As great dietary sources of potassium, bananas could be especially beneficial when it comes to keeping your kidneys healthy.

So as you can see, bananas pack quite the healthy punch. And they are great for all ages. Add a banana to your child’s lunches everyday, or slice up in their cereal. You can also make delicious banana bread with them. You can also add them to oats and many other recipes!
