Florida has noted increased number of cases of norovirus in the first half of this year with the virus quickly spreading in places that house large population such as health facilities, elder care centers, schools, day care centers, and cruise ships.

The virus is more likely to occur in winter and can be transmitted by direct contact with food, beverages, etc., or other people, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Record-Breaking Numbers

In the first week of December the US had 91 outbreaks of norovirus, up from 69 in the previous week and above a previous record of 65 outbreaks in December several years ago. These figures which were cited in the data compiled by the CDC were reported by Miami Herald.

Even though people commonly call it stomach flu, it is not related to the influenza virus. It usually lasts from one to three days but the diseases is still uncomfortable and easily spread.

Florida Among the Top

In the CDC-supported surveillance system called CaliciNet, Florida ranks second in confirmed cases reported between September 2023 and October 2024. Juxtaposing the current results with the previous data clearly shows how the virus affects the population across the state.

While experts are closely observing the tendencies, people should be informed about the approved ways of staying away from this highly contagious virus.
